Dr. Hiroshi Furukawa completed his doctoral program in Intelligent Systems at the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, Kyushu University, earning his Ph.D. in Engineering in 1998.
His career began at NEC Central Research Laboratories (1996–2003) before he joined Kyushu University as an Associate Professor (2003–2010) and later a Professor (2010–2018). Throughout his professional life, he has consistently focused on the research, development, and commercialization of wireless communication systems.
A significant achievement was his invention of Site Selection Transmit Diversity (SSDT), which was adopted as a global standard for 3G mobile communication systems in 2000. Since 2003, he has been deeply involved in the research and development of wireless backhaul for small cells.
From 2007 to 2016, he served as the Project Leader for the MIMO-MESH Project, a key initiative within the Regional Technology Cluster project sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. While at Kyushu University, he founded PicoCELA Inc. in 2008. He has since served on numerous committees for academic societies, government bodies, and municipalities both in Japan and internationally.
Dr. Furukawa has delivered many invited lectures worldwide and has been the recipient of multiple awards, including being named the Kyushu Regional Representative for the 2016 EY Entrepreneur of the Year. He holds over 60 registered patents and has authored more than 100 research papers.
He is also a co-author of several books, including "Latest Trends in Wi-Fi
Network Technologies Toward Gigabit 2013–2014" (Impress Business Media)
and "Advances in 3G Enhanced Technologies for Wireless Communications"
(Artech House).
